American as Apple Pie

It’s commonly called the unofficial start to summer, we know it as Memorial Day, observed on the last Monday of the month of May, which falls on May 25th this year. For history buffs, did you know there’s a South Carolina connection to Memorial Day. One of the first Memorial Day celebrations in the United States was by newly freed slaves on May 1, 1865 in Charleston, South Carolina. Memorial Day weekend is usually a time to spend with family and friends with favorite cookout recipes. Many of those include pies, cakes, breads, pastries, which are all made by Harlan Bakeries. The family owned company was founded in 1990 by the Harlan brothers in Avon, Indiana. What started as a bagel maker has grown to become one of the largest wholesale bakeries in the country.
